Khodrocar - Have you heard? Lamborghini is building an SUV. The Urus promises to be one of the best-looking, fastest, most powerful SUVs when it hits the market in just a few months. We wouldn’t expect anything less from the Italian supercar maker.
The Urus will be just the second SUV in the marque’s long and storied history, following the LM002 before it, and will blend supercar cues with over-the-top modern luxuries. Here’s everything we know about it so far.
What Is It?
Rumors of a Lamborghini SUV have been long in the making. The first concept made its debut in 2012 at the Beijing International Auto Show, and plenty of teasers and spy photos have followed since then, hinting at the SUV’s arrival.
Lamborghini promises that the Urus will utilize the same supercar-driven performance found throughout the lineup when it debuts; and not only will it be fast, it will be pretty, too. Most of the production styling has already been previewed in the 2012 concept, while spy photos have further perpetuated that angular look.
What Does It Look Like?
If you need an idea of how the production version might look, the rendering pictured here could be your best bet. Blending cues from the original concept with updated angles from recent spy photos, the Urus looks lovely wearing production sheet metal.
The front fascia will be highlighted by an angular grille and a sharp nose similar to the Huracan and Aventador before it. The lower portion of the grille will be just as aggressive with two angular vents and a lower central vent, aiding in airflow management and engine cooling.
Out back, the Urus will feature a set of sleek LED taillights, quad exhaust tips, and a short rear window – not that it matters, a backup camera will undoubtedly come standard. Big wheels and a low center of gravity will keep things looking sporty, but overall, the Urus promises to be more stunning than the original concept.
What’s Under The Hood?
Already we know that the Lamborghini Urus will come standard with a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 developing as much as 650 horsepower (484 kilowatts), which could make it the quickest SUV around the Nurburgring… not that Lamborghini cares. But varying powertrains could push the horsepower (and the range) even further, putting it closer in competition to rivals like the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.
A plug-in hybrid model is expected to join the lineup sometime in 2019, about a year after the standard gas version’s debut. Given that rivals like the Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid will soon be available, and could come with as much as 671 hp (500 kW) borrowed from the Panamera, expect the Urus to be somewhere in the same neighborhood in terms of performance.
If we’re lucky, Lamborghini may even introduce an all-electric version in the future. Just don’t expect that same technology to carry over to a sports car.
How Much Will It Cost?
The Lamborghini Urus will cost around $200,000 when it goes on sale. The marque expects to build 1,000 units of the Urus in 2018 before boosting volume to 3,500 units in 2019. At full production, Lamborghini estimates that the Urus will account for half of the Italian supercar maker’s annual output.
When Will We See It?
Pre-production of the Urus kicked off in April at Lamborghini’s Sant’Agata Bolognese factory, but the production version won’t make its debut until December 4, 2017. The Urus is expected to be available worldwide, with a focus on markets like the U.S. and China.
